About Me

Aloha & Welcome to Ask Nurse Santos!

My name is Claire Santos and I've been a health care professional in our Hawaii community for over 20 years in my practice as a registered nurse (RN).

I believe that the key to achieving the highest quality of patient care ultimately rests on the education and guidance of our patients and their loved ones; empowering them with the information they need to make informed decisions about their healthcare.

I believe that registered nurses are true patient advocates who have expertise not only in their clinical practice, but in communication, health literacy and cultural competence. Registered nurses address health disparities and language access issues every day, and they make every effort to educate patients and their loved ones in a way that meets their needs.

I've walked many paths with patients in my care, whether during a new diagnosis or critical situation; whether a chronic condition or at the end of life.  I have a deep appreciation and understanding of the stress and the distress that come with crisis, and I understand where I can be of assistance as an advocate.

My intentions are to be your healthcare advocate and to help you learn more about your options so that you can make informed decisions about your own or your loved one's health care situation.  My site does not intend to replace your provider's professional recommendations, and you shouldn't change anything about your plan of care without first talking with your healthcare team.

On the other side of the coin, as a health communicator and medical writer, I compose and edit various professional-level documents for nursing and patient education and for publication in professional journals.  I'm active on various social media sites so that I can learn new information and then reach the most people with important news and updates about healthcare topics.
